The Bridge was incorporated in 1978 as a non-profit shelter program offering a family-like atmosphere for women and children in crisis situations. Today, it is one of the largest crisis centers in Texas serving survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness. The Bridge provides shelter programs, education and prevention services, crisis counseling and advocacy, and other vital support options to more than 20,000 people annually.

As an agent of change, The Bridge assists women and children in crisis, particularly survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and homelessness. To this end, The Bridge advocates for the oppressed; provides shelter, food and clothing to the needy; and cares for and supports the community and itself.

At The Bridge, we believe that all people have the right to be free from harm, to be respected, and to determine and pursue their own goals.

All services are provided without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, handicap, sexual orientation, religion, or political beliefs.

The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc. (The Bridge) began in 1978 with a vision to reach out to those in need, give them assistance in rebuilding their lives and help them achieve greater self-determination. It began with a handful of dedicated volunteers and an emergency shelter that had a capacity for 6 families.

Today, The Bridge is a comprehensive crisis intervention and prevention center that serves up to 75 women and children in the emergency shelter daily and has expanded its programs to include 47 units of long-term housing, non-resident counseling and advocacy services, on-site children’s services, community education and prevention services and a variety of other programs.
