What is sexual assault:
The penetration of a person’s anus, vagina, or oral cavity with an object or sexual organ by the perpetrator without the person’s consent or unwanted contact of a sexual nature.

Sexual assault includes:

  • Rape—sexual intercourse against a person’s will (including marital rape)
  • Forcible sodomy—anal or oral sex against a person’s will
  • Forcible object penetration by perpetrator or causing person to penetrate his or herself
  • Unwanted sexual touching or coerced contact
  • Sexual contact with minors, whether consensual or not
  • Solicitation of minors through the Internet
  • Possession of child pornography
  • Incest

Statistics:

  • In Texas, over 224,000 children & 104,000 adults are sexually assaulted annually
  • 60% of rapes occur in the survivor/victim’s home
  • Alcohol is the number one date rape drug
  • 77% of all rapes are committed by someone known to the victim
  • 57% of rapes involve only one assailant.  16% involve 2 rapists and 27% involve 3 or more rapists
  • One person is raped every 1.9 minutes
  • Total costs are estimated to be $127 billion a year in the United States, excluding the costs of child sexual abuse.

The most common date rape drugs are:

  • Alcohol remains the most commonly used date rape drug, being readily available as well as legal. Many assailants use alcohol because their victims often willingly imbibe it, and can be encouraged to drink enough to lose inhibitions or consciousness. Even if the victim agrees to sex, the act may be considered rape in some jurisdictions if the victim's judgment was impaired or incapacitated by alcohol.

If you are sexually assaulted:

  • Get to a place where you will be safe from further attack. For your own protection, call the police immediately, especially if the assailant is still nearby. The police will help you whether or not you choose to prosecute the assailant.
  • Call a friend or family member for support.
  • Get medical attention immediately. The primary purpose of a medical examination following a rape is to check for physical injury, the presence of sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy as a result of the rape. The secondary purpose of a medical examination is to aid in the police investigation and legal proceedings. So, get medical attention as quickly as possible.
  • Don't bathe or douche. Bathing or douching might be the first thing you want to do. However, you will be literally washing away valuable evidence. Wait until a doctor has examined you.
  • Save your clothing. It is all right to change clothes. But save what you were wearing. Your clothing could be used as evidence for prosecution. Place each item of clothing in a separate paper bag for the police.
  • Report the incident to the police. It is up to you, but reporting a rape isn't the same thing as prosecuting a rape. Prosecution can be determined later.
